Project Summary
This project involved the design of a new streambank stabilization system along South Boulder Creek in Boulder, Colorado. Working closely with Green Landscape, the contractor, Level designed a combination of grouted-boulder retaining walls and vegetated Flex MSE walls to provide an attractive and functional stabilization solution.
Although the creek is normally relatively small, larger and more powerful flows are anticipated due to the upstream Gross Reservoir expansion. The existing streambank was determined to be susceptible to erosion and damage during high-flow events. The completed improvements provide long-term stabilization while maintaining a natural appearance.

Scope of Work
Streambank Stabilization: The existing streambank along South Boulder Creek was susceptible to erosion and damage during high-flow events.
With larger flows anticipated due to the upstream Gross Reservoir expansion, a long-term stabilization solution was needed.
Engineering scope included:
- Streambank stabilization design
- Grouted-boulder retaining walls
- Vegetated Flex MSE walls
- Coordination with Green Landscape
Project Outcome
- Long-term stabilization of the existing streambank
- Designed with anticipated higher-flow conditions in mind
- Combined structural stabilization with a natural appearance

Key Project Highlights
- Stabilized a vulnerable section of South Boulder Creek
- Designed for anticipated increased creek flows
- Used grouted-boulder retaining walls and vegetated Flex MSE walls
- Coordinated closely with Green Landscape during design
- Maintained a natural appearance along the creek
